EDITORIAL: Election Day decisions [The Beacon endorses Jamie Eldridge]

The Beacon, 10/30/08

Middlesex and Worcester Senate District

While we don’t agree with Jamie Eldridge on all his positions, when it comes to constituent services, standing by his beliefs, forming coalitions and explaining his views, Eldridge, an Acton Democrat, is a model legislator. This is why he is the best fit for the Middlesex and Worcester Senate District seat.

His Republican opponent, Steven Levy, is at his best when he is pointing out Eldridge’s more liberal views on taxes and budgeting — focusing in, for example, on Eldridge’s support of raising the gas tax while residents are struggling with the high cost of fuel or his endorsement of a state budget that was based on overly optimistic revenue figures. Still, Eldridge doesn’t vote the party line; he votes for what he believes is right.

But when it comes to the environment, social issues, business growth and education, particularly as it relates to advocating for more money from the state for local schools, Eldridge is right on. He has served the 37thMiddlesex District well for six years, never absent for an important meeting or silent when he sees a chance to help a constituent. And he is the right pick to succeed Acton Democrat Pam Resor in the state Senate.
